Project: Solar PV Installation
Location: Lower Brailes, Warwickshire
Date: July 2009

The Green Electrician was asked to install a domestic array of PV solar panels to generate enough electricity to supply 100% of the family’s electricity requirements.
Located in a Conservation Area, the owners contacted the Planning Office and were advised that planning permission was not required, as it came under the 'Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (England) Order 2008'. The property is 150 years old, with a new roof dating back 30 years.
The site survey showed the roof of slate with a southwest orientation, with slight shading during summer. Maximising the roof space, we were able to design a system of 16 Sanyo hybrid panels, to produce an estimated 2,800 kWh/year, enough to cover annual electricity requirements. The Sanyo hybrid panels were chosen for their efficiency. Whilst more expensive than standard panels, their output is higher.
The homeowners benefited from a grant from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme and are eligible for the new Feed-in Tariff (36.5p/unit generated). The grant programme finishes in April 2010.
"We are now self sufficient in electricity, which was our target. We have been monitoring our meter and our record so far is 16.5 units in one day. Very promising!" said homeowner Jo Taylor.
Technology: 205W Sanyo Hybrid Solar PV Modules
Energy Output: 2,800kWh/year
Carbon Saving: 1.2kg CO2/year
Planning: Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Amendment) England Order 2008 - the installation was permitted under Part 40 Class A.1 (c) II of the Act.
