James Pavitt, a member of sustainable action group, Transition Stratford, approached specialist pv installers, The Green Electrician to install a solar array on his home in central Stratford-upon-Avon. After a site survey, a design of 10 Sharp 180 Watt solar panels (1.8kWp) was installed on a south facing roof, either side of an existing solar thermal system. The photovoltaic system would incur some shading from a neighbouring house during winter, reducing the efficiency a little during December and January.
James and Elizabeth, his partner, decided to install solar PV for a number of reasons, but chiefly to reduce carbon emissions. “We like to think that we are reasonably green, but even after installing solar water heating and a wood burning stove, we felt that we were still far too dependent on fossil fuels, so the next stage was to generate solar electricity ourselves,” explains James.

As part of a re-roofing project, The Green Electrician was asked to design and install an integrated solar pv system on a private house in Bolton. We discussed the project with the customer and worked with the roofers to coordinate the project.
Once the roofers had completed to membrane and batten stage, our installation team installed the 2.52 pv system. The roofers then completed the roof, tiling around the system.
"We worked closely with the customer and roofing contractors throughout to ensure our team worked within the roofer's tight schedule. The customer was delighted to be producing power after the two day installation and is looking at fitting an additional array to take full advantage of the new feed-in tariff," reports director, Stephen Davies.

The Green Electrician designed and installed a solar PV system on this private house Oxfordshire. After conducting a site survey and talking to the customer, we designed a 1.8kWp photovoltaic system, an array of 10 Sharp 180 solar panels to be installed on a single storey tile roof. The customer also purchased the Sunny Beam stand-alone meter to show instantaneous power output and daily output over the last 31 days.
The system exceeded its estimated annual output of 1240kW hours in the first year.
"One advantage of installing the system is that it has made us much more conscious of electricity usage and hence has reduced our overall consumption signigicantly," the owner reports. "Looking at the price difference between cost and selling, I am expecting very low bills for this year."

The Green Electrician was asked to install a domestic array of PV solar panels to generate enough electricity to supply 100% of the family’s electricity requirements.
Located in a Conservation Area, the owners contacted the Planning Office and were advised that planning permission was not required, as it came under the 'Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (England) Order 2008'. The property is 150 years old, with a new roof dating back 30 years.
The site survey showed the roof of slate with a southwest orientation, with slight shading during summer. Maximising the roof space, we were able to design a system of 16 Sanyo hybrid panels, to produce an estimated 2,800 kWh/year, enough to cover annual electricity requirements. The Sanyo hybrid panels were chosen for their efficiency. Whilst more expensive than standard panels, their output is higher.
The homeowners benefited from a grant from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme and are eligible for the new Feed-in Tariff (36.5p/unit generated). The grant programme finishes in April 2010.

The Green Electrician was approached to design and install a solar PV array on a holiday house in Anglesey, North Wales.
The site survey showed the roof to be north west orientation and clear of obstruction and shadow. We advised as the orientation was optimum and the solar panels would be less efficient than a more southerly orientation and we provided comparison graphs and calculations to show the difference in output. The customer was keen to proceed on this basis. We designed a 2.16kWp array of 12 Sharp solar panels to be installed on a slate roof.
The customer also purchased the Sunny Beam stand-alone meter to show instantaneous power output and daily output over the last 31 days.

We were approached to design and install a solar PV array on the stable block of a small-holding in Shropshire. We were asked to install a second array three months later on the house roof.
Our initial site survey confirmed both locations were suitable, in direction, pitch and roof structure. Both installations were completed in the agreed timescales. An import export metre was also fitted to enable the customer to keep track of how much energy is being produced and sold back to the grid at any time.
The two systems have a combined output of 1.96kWp with an energy output of 1,700kWh/year to be used to offset current electricity bills with surplus sold back to the grid and extra revenue in the sale of ROCS.
